The National Portrait Gallery was established by the U.S. Congress in 1962 as a branch of the Smithsonian Institution, with the mission of serving as a free and public museum dedicated to the exhibition and study of portraiture.
The National Portrait Gallery, since 2006, once in every three years invites both emerging and established artists working in the U.S. to submit a recent portrait to the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition.

Eligibility:

Both emerging and professional artists who are over the age of 18 and are living and working in the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa and the U.S. Virgin Islands, can participate in the competition

The artwork submission fee is $50
Award/prize:

First-prize winner $25,000

Second-prize winner $10,000

Third-prize winner $7,500

People’s choice award - $1,000

All finalists’ works will be exhibited at the Portrait Gallery
