About Opportunity
The internationally recognized organization Locust Projects invites visual artists at all career stages, including art collectives and curators worldwide, to apply for the Project Room Open Call. The opportunity offers space and financial support to create a new, ambitious, large-scale work in its 625 sq ft gallery. Proposals addressing contemporary issues such as race, identity, gender equity, basic needs, climate change, or environmental advocacy are particularly encouraged. Selected artists will present a solo exhibition of new, installation-based work created specifically for Locust Projects’ Project Room. Projects should also include community engagement through public programs. Proposals are reviewed by a rotating jury of past exhibiting artists and a local curator, with the process coordinated by co-founder Elizabeth Withstandley. Selection criteria include the conceptual strength and ambition of the proposal, the quality of the artist’s past work, originality in activating Locust Projects’ space, feasibility within budget and accessibility requirements, and relevance to contemporary art, social issues, or community impact.
About Organizer
Locust Projects, founded in 1998 in Miami by artists Westen Charles, COOPER, and Elizabeth Withstandley, is the city’s longest-running nonprofit alternative art space. Its mission is to support visual artists at all career stages by fostering risk-taking, experimentation, and conversations around new art and ideas. The organization offers exhibitions, residencies, public programs, and resources to empower artists and promote innovative, site-specific work outside the commercial gallery system.
