About Opportunity

The Maltings (Berwick) Trust, in collaboration with Create Berwick and the Living Barracks Project, is seeking an artist or art organization to create a new light installation for Berwick Barracks in 2025. Applicants must submit a proposal that reflects the rich history and heritage of Berwick Barracks while being contemporary and accessible to a wide audience. The project may include digital mapping, community performances, sculpture, and installation, and can be a one-time event or a temporary installation, but the main requirement is to feature an element of light. Artists should have experience working in heritage contexts, be mindful of conservation issues and the significance of listed buildings, and be informed by the social and historical heritage of such sites. They should have a well-established art practice and experience producing work in public spaces or non-gallery settings with similar budgets. An international and local selection panel from The Maltings (Berwick) Trust, Create Berwick, and the Living Barracks Project will shortlist up to three applicants, who will be invited to visit Berwick Barracks and develop a full proposal, including a budget, to present to the project partners. Shortlisted applicants will receive a £500 fee to attend the site visit and create a detailed proposal.
